How to read a State Bar profile
What a bar number, license status and discipline history tell you, and what they cannot.
Why we link to the State Bar
Every attorney listed here includes a bar number and a link to their official State Bar of California page. The State Bar is the licensing authority, so it is the right place to verify that a lawyer is licensed. A directory, including this one, is a starting point and should never replace that check.
What the page shows
A typical attorney profile lists several pieces of information worth reading slowly.
- License status, such as Active, along with the date the person was admitted to practice.
- The office address and contact details the lawyer has registered with the bar.
- Any public record of discipline, which appears on the same profile.
What it cannot tell you
A clean record does not mean a lawyer is a good fit, and an active license does not measure skill or responsiveness. Likewise, the number of years in practice is only a rough indicator. Use the profile for verification and use a consultation for fit.
Why dates matter
License status changes over time. When this directory records a status, it is the status observed on the date we checked, which is displayed on each profile. Treat it as a snapshot and confirm the current status before hiring.
